Trading Histories

About the project

Castle MarketTrading Histories was a year-long community heritage project based at the Castle Market.

It was a project that everyone could be involved in – not just focussing on the building, it was about the people that have brought Castle Market to life, both traders and shoppers. We were interested in collecting stories and using them to create a people’s history of Castle Market. As a result, we were able to create a vibrant record of the market through taking photographs, writing poems, drawing pictures, exploring archives and sharing memories.

Our research culminated in an exhibition celebrating the life of the market, as well as a booklet bringing our work together. This website will continue to make results publicly available as well as providing an archive of our events and activities.

The project was managed by ArcHeritage, which is the Sheffield office of the York Archaeological Trust, and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
